You see the words “affiliate marketing” everywhere, but what does it mean? How do you make money with affiliate marketing?
These are questions that I hear all the time. People want to know how they can work from home doing something they love and get paid for it.
Well, guess what. Affiliate marketing isn’t hard, there is a lot to learn, but it’s not difficult.
How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing
You can’t go wrong with investing in your education. If you want to improve and grow your blog, then you need to make learning a priority.
Most of the free stuff that you find will only take you so far. There isn’t enough room in a blog post to cover the details that you would get from coaching or a course, but it’s enough to get you started in the right direction.
Many bloggers and online influencers skip over affiliate marketing. They either think it’s too hard, that it’s a waste of time, that they will turn followers away, or that their followers just won’t be interested.
However, if you’re not earning money through affiliate marketing, then you are leaving money on the table.
Perhaps you’ve tried affiliate marketing in the past, but nothing seemed to work. Now, you just feel like it’s not possible and that you’ll always be stuck.
Trust me; I know how you feel. When I started out blogging, I knew NOTHING about it, and due to that, I was afraid to try new things, and I was definitely afraid of affiliate marketing because I didn’t want to scare my readers away or waste my time.
What is affiliate marketing?
It’s when you recommend a product or service that you believe in, to your readers or followers, and they make a purchase through your links or referral codes, and you earn a commission.
You get to tell people about something that you love, and that has helped you, and recommend it to others. Everyone wins! Your readers find a great new product or service, and it doesn’t cost them anything extra. Sometimes they can even get a coupon or discount through your recommendation. How great is that!
How do I earn affiliate commissions?
There are three different ways to earn income from an affiliate.
Percentage: You receive a percentage of the sale of a product. Before you join any affiliate program, you will be told what percentage you will earn. The amount can range from around 4% to 50%, depending on the product or service.
Commission Per Lead: This is when you get a fixed amount for providing a customer with a new lead, such as signing up for an account. This amount can range from a few cents to a few dollars per lead.
Fixed Amount: This is a set commission that you receive regardless of the price of the product or service.
Do I need a lot of readers or followers to make money?
You don’t need millions of people reading your blog each month to earn income. But to increase your income, you will need to keep your blog growing.
When you understand what your readers are looking for and how to find affiliate programs, you should be able to make money from your site.
How do I increase the page views on my blog?
Produce quality posts
If you want to keep your audience engaged, it’s best to post at least once a week.
Try to write posts that contain between 500 to 3,000 words. Your writing should be informative and engaging, making your readers want more.
Use Grammarly, a free browser extension, to make sure that everything you write is easy to read and error-free.
Grammarly checks your spelling, grammar, and punctuation in Gmail, Facebook, WordPress, Linkedin, and anywhere else you write on the Web.
This is a must-have tool, in my opinion, no matter what your writing skill level, Grammarly will make it better.
You may write the most fantastic blog post ever, but if it’s full of errors, it’s not going to look professional.
Affiliates, sponsors and other bloggers will take you a lot more seriously when you have a professional-looking post. Grammarly is free and easy to install, so if you want to keep your readers coming back, use Grammarly.
Find group boards to join on PinGroupie in your niche. If you haven’t already done so, switch to a free business account on Pinterest and install rich pins. Make sure that your board covers don’t contain text, just high-quality images.
Use LibreStock, a site that searches 47 free stock photo websites, to find quality images. Use SEO keywords in your board descriptions.
Create a Facebook business page for your blog. Other sites that you should consider are Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram.
Join Facebook groups. These private groups of like-minded people help each other with feedback, advice, a big dose of knowledge and finding new clients. The following groups are for entrepreneurs and bloggers:
These groups let you share your content and get more eyes on your posts.
Don’t skip this step, this is probably the biggest thing you can do to drive traffic to your site. Each group has its own set of rules, pay attention to them if you want to succeed in the group and not be kicked out.
Guest posting is one of the best ways to get exposure or traffic back to your site.
Use Google to find opportunities by typing the keyword “submit a guest post,” check out a community of guest bloggers at My Blog Guest, or ask people in your Facebook groups.
Some sites that accept guest posts are:
- Dollar Stretcher
- Graphic Design Junction
- Women On Business
- Yanko Design
- Health Resource 4 You
- The Sociable
Add share buttons to all your posts to make it easy for your content to be shared on social media. Social Warfare is a popular plugin that lets you add attractive buttons without slowing your website down.
Make sure your headline gets people’s attention. CoSchedule is a website that will help you determine if your headline needs improvement.
Use search engine optimization to increase traffic to your site. The Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress is a complete SEO solution, and it’s easy to use.
Get a second opinion
Is it clear what your website is about? Are your posts the best they can be? Ask friends and family to give their honest opinion about your site. Can they figure out what your site is about within a couple of minutes?
To get an unbiased review, try user testing. UserTesting will give you a video of someone reviewing your website. For feedback on an individual post go to The Daily Post and submit your post to The Community Pool, or First Friday forums for advice.
First Friday is for bloggers just starting out, or still in their first month. Community Pool allows all bloggers to post a link to their post or website for feedback.
How do I find affiliate programs?
Make a list of your favorite tools, products, and services that you would like to recommend to your readers. Then you can start by searching online for affiliate programs for the things on your list, just type the name of the item followed by the word “affiliate” in Google.
You can also go to a company’s website and scroll to the bottom and look for the word “affiliate” and click on it. Affiliate networks are companies that deal with many companies and products, some of the popular ones are:
- Amazon’s Associates
- Ratuken Affiliate Network
- Affiliate Window
- Shop Style Collective
- Offer Juice
- Flex Offers
